Strax Rejuvenation has made its mark as a kind of high-volume superstore of plastic surgery, offering cut-rate prices for a wide variety of cosmetic procedures. The center in Lauderhill boasts that it is performing more of those operations than any other such doctor’s office in America.
But Strax has recently made the news for patient deaths, including an in-depth piece on Strax by the Sun-Sentinel in January. The piece highlighted three patients who died during or not long after surgery.
Last week a fourth patient died, this one a sibling to one of Broward County’s top political families. Rony Wendrow, the sister of Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman, died after reportedly suffering cardiac arrest on the operating table during a routine facial surgery at Strax. Wendrow, a retired Broward school teacher, died on Thursday, three days after the surgery. Wendrow, 61, is survived by two children and three grandchildren.
“We don’t want to comment on anything right now,” said her son, Matt Wendrow, a sergeant at the Broward Sheriff’s Office. “Within the next couple of weeks we might comment.”
A Strax attorney, Peter Mineo, said the center is reviewing the circumstances of Wendrow’s death and contended that extensive media coverage surrounding the center has been unfair and that the center “takes every bad result very seriously.”
“At this time the cause of death has not been determined and Strax is fully cooperating with the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office,” said Mineo. “Strax is also doing its own independent review of what occurred. It is clear that Strax’s rate of complications are well below the national average. The procedures that are in place and the incredible safety record of Strax means that this is likely to turn out to be an unfortunate complication from surgery.”
All of this blog’s sympathy and best wishes go out to Lieberman and the entire Wendrow family.
