Prominent Politician’s Sister Dies After Operation At Cosmetic Surgery Center

23 May

Strax Rejuvenation has made its mark as a kind of high-volume superstore of plastic surgery, offering cut-rate prices for a wide variety of cosmetic procedures. The center in Lauderhill boasts that it is performing more of those operations than any other such doctor’s office in America.

But Strax has recently made the news for patient deaths, including an in-depth piece on Strax by the Sun-Sentinel in January. The piece highlighted three patients who died during or not long after surgery.

Wendrow

Last week a fourth patient died, this one a sibling to one of Broward County’s top political families. Rony Wendrow, the sister of Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman, died after reportedly suffering cardiac arrest on the operating table during a routine facial surgery at Strax. Wendrow, a retired Broward school teacher, died on Thursday, three days after the surgery. Wendrow, 61, is survived by two children and three grandchildren.

“We don’t want to comment on anything right now,” said her son, Matt Wendrow, a sergeant at the Broward Sheriff’s Office. “Within the next couple of weeks we might comment.”

A Strax attorney, Peter Mineo, said the center is reviewing the circumstances of Wendrow’s death and contended that extensive media coverage surrounding the center has been unfair and that the center “takes every bad result very seriously.”

“At this time the cause of death has not been determined and Strax is fully cooperating with the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office,” said Mineo. “Strax is also doing its own independent review of what occurred.  It is clear that Strax’s rate of complications are well below the national average. The procedures that are in place and the incredible safety record of Strax means that this is likely to turn out to be an unfortunate complication from surgery.”

All of this blog’s sympathy and best wishes go out to Lieberman and the entire Wendrow family.

This really is very tragic. My sympathies to her family and friends. All this poor woman wanted was to make herself better looking, otherwise I suspect she was in general good health and now she’s dead.
To say this situation is below the national average sounds extremely wrong. There have been too many deaths from what would be called routine manor procedures from this Surgery Center. Investigations are definitely warranted.

Okay!!! We’re back in the LOCAL scene. Thanks Bob. It’s unfortunate that this had to be the story. Commissioner Lieberman has enough on her plate without this tragedy.
I thought that the WPLG INTRO,” that Bob Norman’s Blog existed was wonderful. Let’s see if we can get you your Pulitzer!!

We all know that every type of surgery comes with risk. I’ve had a good experience at this facility. Here’s an article they recently published.

Strax decided for themselves that they are NOT an Ambulatory Surgical Center (although it is) therefore it does NOT have to be licensed and inspected by the state (AHCA) like every other health care faclity of every type including ALL surgical centers, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

    NO oversight.
    NO standards to meet.
    NO credentialing of personnel
    NO minimum standards
    NO industry accepted, evidenced-based processes
NO quality processes for infection control, gas line patency and accuracy of equipment.
    Much more

How can this happen? Strax defined themselves as a doctor’s office, not a surgical center. Therfore, no inspections like every other surgical center as well as every hospital’s surgery department has to comply.

Strax should have to inform evey patient of that. But they don’t.

Contact the Florida department:AHCA. Ask to see the standards manual that all surgical centers have to comply.
Ask if Strax has ever had an inspection for these standards.
    The answer is no.
And the result is the deaths that have been reported.
